Ductile Iron Pipes & Fittings

Ductile iron pipe and fittings provide long term efficiency and protection for diverse water and wastewater applications.

Ductile iron pipe and fittings provide long term efficiency and protection for diverse water and wastewater applications.

Our range of high-quality ductile iron pipe and fittings are engineered for long-term performance within your network. The PAM Zinalium active corrosion protection system adds further resilience, extending the lifespan of pipeline by actively protecting against the corrosive effects of certain soils.

The range is manufactured to AS/NZS2280, with all our fittings and valves nylon coated to AS/NZS4158. Clover’s suite of ductile iron products also include DICL pipe and FBE fittings.

Ductile iron pipe creates flexible solutions that remain durable and reliable throughout the life of your network, and our fittings are compatible with TOM PVC-O, PVC-M, GRP, PVC-U and DI systems for a variety of project requirements.

WHAT IS DUCTILE IRON AND WHY WE RECOMMEND IT

Engineered with ductile cast iron, ductile iron pipe is a durable and flexible solution for water and wastewater systems.

Key benefits of ductile iron pipe systems include:

  • High strength: Resists soil pressure, construction loads and surges with strong hoop and axial capacity.
  • High-burst strength: Suitable for high-pressure applications.
  • Corrosion resistance: Our industry-leading Zinalium zinc-aluminium coating protects against soil corrosion.
  • Durability: Globally trusted for maintenance-free, long-term use.

APPLICATIONS FOR DUCTILE IRON PIPES

Our ductile iron pipe systems are suitable for both pressure and non-pressure applications and can be installed buried or above ground.

Typical applications for ductile iron pipes include:

  • Potable and recycled water supply
  • Irrigation and raw water
  • Gravity and sewer rising mains
  • Mining and slurry
  • Stormwater and drainage
  • Buried and above ground

Zinalium-coated ductile iron pipe features a three-part protective system: the pipe itself, a Zinalium alloy coating and a synthetic resin pore sealer.

The Zinalium coating is made from 85% zinc and 15% aluminium, melted onto the as-cast surface at high pressure. This alloy creates a uniform microstructure that maximises the corrosion resistance of the zinc. It’s applied at a minimum thickness of 400g/m².

To enhance durability, a synthetic epoxy pore sealer is applied over the coating at 100μm. This controls how the zinc is exposed to the soil. Without this layer on the ductile iron pipe, the protective properties of the Zinalium coating could wash away, reducing long-term protection.

WHY DUCTILE IRON IS THE SUSTAINABLE CHOICE

Ductile iron pipes meet the needs of those seeking to balance environmental responsibility with long-term asset performance. Our partner, Saint-Gobain PAM, applies Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) assessments to help quantify sustainability outcomes across the entire pipeline lifespan, from manufacturing to installation, operation and eventual recycling.

Ductile iron is 100% recyclable at end-of-life, delivering a long service life (often 100+ years) with minimal maintenance. With fewer disruptions to a pipeline’s serviceability over time, ductile iron pipe systems are an industry-leading choice across a range of applications.

Ductile Iron Pipe FAQs

What are the differences between Zinalium®-coated ductile iron and standard protective coatings in terms of lifespan and maintenance?

Zinalium is a high-performance protective alloy coating made from zinc and aluminium, applied to ductile iron pipes to improve resistance to corrosion. Compared with standard coatings such as bitumen or epoxy, Zinalium offers impressive service life, particularly in aggressive or saline soils, by forming a barrier that slows down corrosion over time.

Are your ductile iron pipes suitable for corrosive or saline environments?

Yes, Clover’s ductile iron pipes are highly suitable for corrosive or saline environments, thanks the the Zinalium coating and pore sealer finish. Our ductile iron pipes feature a three-part protective system: the ductile iron body, a Zinalium alloy coating, and a synthetic resin pore sealer. This final layer regulates how the zinc interacts with the surrounding soil and prevents it from washing away too quickly to ensure the protective barrier remains effective over time.

What pipeline materials are compatible with your ductile iron fittings?

Our ductile iron fittings are compliant with AS/NZS2280 and support a variety of connection methods, including rubber ring joints, flanged joints and restraint joints, allowing them to interface effectively with multiple pipe materials. They are most commonly used with:

  • Ductile Iron Pipe Systems – for sizes DN80 – DN750
  • PVC Pressure Pipe Series 1 & 2 – including OPVC, MPVC, and UPVC pipes in sizes DN100 to DN600.
  • GRP Pipe Systems – for sizes DN300 to DN4000.
Can your ductile iron pipes connect with existing legacy infrastructure?

Yes. We support clients in assessing key factors when connecting ductile iron fittings to legacy infrastructure such as asbestos cement or cast iron. This can include assessing the outside diameter of older pipelines, which often vary from modern standards, as well as their condition; selecting mechanical couplings or adaptors suited to the surface and structural behaviour of materials like asbestos cement or cast iron; and ensuring correct gasket selection and restraint systems to manage internal pressure and ground movement.

When should I specify ductile iron pipes over PE or PVC?

Ductile iron pipes can be the preferred choice where you require higher mechanical strength, greater pressure capacity or increased external load resistance. Our ductile iron pipe range offers excellent long-term durability in corrosive or saline soils, thanks to its Zinalium coating. Ductile iron is often specified when structural integrity and long service life are critical to the asset design. At Clover, we work with you to assess project conditions and select the right material or combination of materials to optimise both performance and cost.

Do you customise your ductile iron systems for each project?

Yes, we offer customised configurations tailored to the needs of your project. Our solutions are designed to be fully integrated and fit-for-purpose, combining ductile iron pipeline components with other compatible products across our range. We work closely with clients to configure systems that suit their specifications, site conditions and delivery timelines. This includes coordinating the supply of all required components and ensuring they arrive in sequence for efficient installation. This unique end-to-end approach helps reduce on-site complexity and supports the smooth delivery of infrastructure projects.

Do you offer training or site support for contractors installing ductile iron pipes for the first time?

Yes, we provide technical support throughout the delivery and installation process, including on-site technical recommendations where required. Our project team works closely with contractors and partners to ensure ductile iron systems are installed safely, efficiently and in line with specifications. Whether it’s guidance on jointing methods, alignment or product selection, we’re available to assist during key stages of installation.
